Experience in Practicing Tai Chi | Encounter Tai Chi, Encounter the Gift of Life (Part Three)

Taiji Songquan· Promote the Dao and cultivate righteousness

It began in 1988

Take it slow. There will eventually be gains

In this world, there are countless encounters. Among them, there is a kind of encounter that will benefit one for a lifetime. My encounter with the Chen-style Tai Chi master, with the late master Yang Songquan, with the chief coach Yang Junfeng and other fellow practitioners, is precisely this kind of fate.

In March 2023, at my husband’s recommendation, I insisted on coming to Jiulong Wall in Beihai Park once a week for one and a half hours each time to practice the first stage of the old frame of Chen-style Tai Chi (the beginner stage of strokes) under the guidance of Master Yang Songquan’s coaching team. Due to the pandemic, it was not until more than two years later that we officially began enrolling students this time. Therefore, there are a particularly large number of students in this beginner class. Among us trainees, there are quite a few who, like me, come to practice as a couple first. Seeing the changes day by day, the other half also joins in. Because many people have achieved physical and mental health, family harmony and career success by practicing Tai Chi under the guidance of their masters, the word of mouth has led to an increasing number of friends following their masters to practice Chen-style Tai Chi.

Master Yang Songquan personally demonstrated the movements for us beginners, explained the key points of the movements, and often explained which internal organ of the body the practiced movements correspond to and where they are beneficial to the body. Also leading us to practice repeatedly were Coach Yang Junfeng, the daughter of Master Yang Songquan, and his disciples. They are all extremely patient. Whenever we have any questions, we will get detailed answers from them. Each time, the coaches come quite early. Many students will ask the coaches for advice on movements to make their own movements more standardized. In conclusion, despite my busy work schedule, every weekend when I practice boxing with my coaches and classmates in Beihai, I feel particularly happy. During the break, students either exchange their experiences in practicing boxing or chat about daily life. Because of practicing boxing, they also gain friendships and broaden their horizons. It feels so good.

I must admit that learning body movements is my weak point, so I learn rather slowly. There are quite a few movements that I can’t follow the teacher’s instructions to perform properly. I’m too embarrassed to ask the coach for the movements I don’t know. At the beginning, I studied rather painfully. The coaches always encouraged me to take it slow and not to rush. Day after day, my movements became more and more proficient, and my confidence in practicing Tai Chi also grew higher and higher. I was always a weak child since I was little, and I often caught colds when I grew up. Since I started practicing Tai Chi, I have hardly caught a cold. In both work and life, due to the improvement of physical fitness, work has become increasingly proficient and the quality of life has also been enhanced.

The beginner class will graduate in July 2024. Throughout the entire initial stage of my study, I attended every single session. Regardless of the scorching summer or freezing winter, I persisted in practicing boxing. Hard work pays off. I have roughly learned the movements at the initial stage. Although my Tai Chi is still just so-so, everyone’s situation is different. Being able to remember all the movements at the beginner stage of Tai Chi and practice them is a considerable progress for me. Following the coach’s instructions, I kept practicing and practiced well to make my body and mind healthier. In September 2024, the students of our beginner class began to continue learning the intermediate-level winding technique under the guidance of Coach Yang Junfeng.

Because I have been practicing Tai Chi for a short time and still need to improve my practice in daily life, I have not done well in many aspects. I seldom understand some of the insights my master has gained from “Tai Chi is the Way”. But I can keep calm, take it slow and make progress gradually. Encouraged and supported by my husband, while I persisted in learning the intermediate-level winding technique, I also started to repractice the basic stroke stage of Tai Chi under the guidance of my coach. Being able to repeatedly follow the coach to practice boxing has enabled me to understand the key points of learning that I didn’t grasp before. It has made my previously non-standard movements more and more standardized, and the feeling of practicing boxing has also been getting better and better. Relearning the beginner stage of Tai Chi under the guidance of my coach reminds me of what my master once said: Tai Chi can only be mastered by studying hard under the guidance of your master. Watching videos alone won’t achieve the desired effect. Thank you for the encounter! Thank you, Old Tai Chi of the Chen family! I must keep practicing boxing well!
