The origin of Tai Chi, orthodox inheritance

Chen-style Tai Chi originated in Chenjiagou, Wen County, Henan Province, and its ancestor was Chen Bu.

During the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, Chen Wangting, the ninth-generation inheritor of the Chen family, based on the ancestral martial arts, drew on the strengths of various schools, combined the principles of Yin and Yang and the Five elements in the I Ching, and referred to the theories of meridians and guiding and breathing techniques in traditional Chinese medicine to create a new type of martial arts that harmonizes Yin and Yang and combines hardness and softness. This is Chen-style Tai Chi. Since then, the Chen family has passed down this set of boxing routines from generation to generation, and on this basis, has evolved routines with weapons such as knives, spears, swords, sticks, and mace.

Since Chen Wangting initiated the Chen-style Tai Chi, the Chen family has passed it down from generation to generation, and many renowned martial arts experts and Tai Chi masters have emerged one after another, such as the 14th generation Chen Changxing, the 17th generation Chen Fakuo and the 18th generation Chen Zhaopi, all of whom are famous Tai Chi masters.

Master Chen Zhaopi is the 18th generation of the Chen family and the 10th generation inheritor of Chen-style Tai Chi.The master inherited the family teachings from a young age and learned the ancestral Tai Chi from Chen Fakuo. His skills gradually reached a state of perfection. The master has a long and extensive history of boxing. In his early years, he taught boxing in places like Peiping, Nanjing, Xi ‘an and Kaifeng. In 1958, he retired and returned to his hometown of Wen County to teach boxing. In 1960, he was awarded the title of “Master of Tai Chi” at the National Wushu Conference, and in 1964, he was elected as a member of the National Wushu Association. The master has profound theoretical attainments. With decades of experience, he has authored books such as “The Essentials of Chen-style Tai Chi”, “Introduction to Tai Chi”, “Illustrated Chen-style Tai Chi”, and “Thirteen Theoretical Chapters on Chen-style Tai Chi”. The master is of noble character and tireless in teaching. He has made tremendous contributions to the inheritance of Chen-style Tai Chi and is a grandmaster who builds on the past and opens up the future of Chen-style Tai Chi.

Mr. Yang Songquan is the 11th generation inheritor of Chen-style Tai Chi. He is not only the eldest grandson of the grandmaster Chen Zhaopi but also the main inheritor of the master’s lineage. When the master was four years old, Master Chen Zhaopi began to guide him to practice the ancestral Tai Chi alone. By the age of seven, he had already laid an extremely solid foundation in Tai Chi and mastered the genuine skills of a child. At the age of fourteen, he had already fully mastered the routines, weapons and pushing hands of traditional Chen-style Tai Chi, and began to assist Master Chen Zhaopi in teaching martial arts. After being taught by his grandfather through words and deeds for more than ten years, the master not only fully inherited the practice methods of Tai Chi, but also comprehensively mastered the theory and mental techniques of Tai Chi. The master remembered his teacher’s teachings throughout his life, carried forward the will of his predecessors, and promoted Chen-style Tai Chi.

Chen-style Tai Chi was initially passed down only within the Chen family. Since the time of the 14th generation Chen Changxing, it has been taught to other surnames. After nearly a hundred years of development and evolution, it has gradually given rise to schools such as Yang, Wu, Sun, and Wu. Chen-style Tai Chi, as the originator of various Tai Chi schools, possesses strong vitality and inclusiveness, and is deeply loved by people from all over the world. It is the most widely spread and dominant type of Tai Chi in the world today.
